OPTIMIZE YOUR HEALTH
Integrated Medicine: Treating the Whole Person

APRIL 2006

Are you doing everything you can to optimize your health? Let us show you how integrated medicine could help you or someone you know.

A "PATIENT'S" STORY

Meet April, a fairly typical Center patient. April has been lethargic and has noticed more hair in her comb after her shower lately. She just doesn’t feel like doing much of anything, even things she used to think were fun. She is worried that her thyroid is low, but her doctor told her everything was fine at her last check-up two years ago. April has been feeling so slow that it is becoming increasingly more difficult to exercise. She tells people that she has gained weight because of her thyroid, but in reality she stopped her gym membership, telling herself she would buy an exercise bike and work out at home — but it just hasn’t happened. If only she wasn’t so tired all the time. And forget about sex! But the fact is she’s sleeping more than 10 hours a day...

Read on to find out how each member of our integrated team helps April.

MEDICAL NEWS
April's Story: Is Her Thyroid to Blame?

April is certainly not alone in her predicament of lethargy, weight gain and hair loss. Quite a few women experience similar symptoms and long to find answers. Even though all of the symptoms listed here can be due to an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism), these symptoms are nonspecific and can be caused by a number of different issues in her endocrine system. It is simple to blame the thyroid, but for most women like April, taking thyroid hormone supplementation by itself does not relieve all the symptoms. The whole person approach at The Center for Optimal Health is just the right approach to assist April in restoring her health and vitality.

BEHAVIORAL HEALTH NEWS
April's Story: Is She Depressed?

April seems fine on the outside to her family, friends, and co- workers, but there may be more than meets the eye. As a behavioral health specialist, I am especially interested in ruling out depression and other problems. April might deny being depressed to other team members, but her lethargy and lack of interest in doing pleasurable things are red flags that need to be investigated. By taking April’s social and psychological history, I can figure out if she is depressed; but I also need other members of the Center team to rule out medical causes. If she is depressed, this needs to be addressed so that she has energy to take care of her health.

EXERCISE NEWS
April's Story: Rejuvenate Life!

Since her last check up was over a year ago, April will first need a complete medical assessment before she starts an exercise program. This is one reason why the Mind / Body Balance Program is ideal for a patient like April, because her health status will be determined before she begins her program. Once she obtains medical clearance from a physician, April could embark on a rejuvenated and structured exercise program. Since April does not like the gym setting and she has not had the desire or motivation to exercise on her own, a physical therapy evaluation to design an individualized, custom program would assist April in achieving her exercise/life goals, including weight loss, toning, strengthening, improved energy levels, disease prevention, and even relaxation.

NUTRITIONAL NEWS
April's Story: Does She Have a Mineral Deficiency?

April is like many clients who come to me for help in improving their physical health. Often people forget that nutrition is one of the most important building blocks of well-being. With some education and fine- tuning of April’s diet, some of April’s physical symptoms can be solved. For example, hair loss, fatigue, and lack of motivation for exercise can be related to iron or zinc deficiency.

Iron deficiency symptoms include fatigue, pale skin color, irritability, shortness of breath, and weakness to name a few. Zinc deficiency symptoms include hair loss, diarrhea, loss of appetite, and loss of taste.

SEXUAL HEALTH NEWS
April's Story: What Happened to Her Libido?

What April might not tell you is that she never even thinks about sex any more. Her relationship with her partner is more like that of a good friend or roommate than a lover. April falls into bed each night exhausted. When her husband reaches out to touch her, April feels herself pull away.

April may have a thyroid or hormonal imbalance—or she may be experiencing so much stress that she is simply too distracted and worried to think about making love.

SUPPLEMENT CABINET
Fish Oil Omega 3 Fatty Acids

The two active constituents in fish oil are EPA and DHA. EPA (Eicosapentaenoic Acid) has anti-inflammatory effect by competing with Arachidonic Acid for inclusion in the cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase pathways. EPA can also reduce blood viscosity as well as risk of thrombosis. DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid) represents 1/3 of all lipids in brain grey matter. DHA is important for the structural development of neural and synaptic membranes. DHA is implicated in retinal, visual, learning and memory functions.
