OPTIMIZE YOUR HEALTH
Osteoporosis Awareness and Prevention
Stronger Than Bones
By Ryan Seay, Ph.D., Clinical Psychologist
How strong is your self-confidence? How high is your self-esteem?
Like our bones, confidence and esteem are critical to our ability
to hold up in a modern world. Without a positive sense of self,
we can easily crumble under daily stressors.
Most people are uncomfortable or unable to answer the question, “What
are your best qualities?” Many people find it difficult to
make a list of things that they like or find pleasure in doing.
It seems that we have lost touch with the person that matters the
most — yourself.
In spending so much time pleasing and deferring to others, we
have lost knowledge of ourselves. Without knowing who we are, we
cannot have self-confidence and self-esteem. It is difficult to
have confidence in ourselves if we do not know who we are. Think
about how much you defer time, energy, and self-pleasure to others.
We give to family, friends, co-workers, and the boss. Over time,
we lose touch with what we like that makes us happy.
Try the following activity to start on the road to strengthening
your core self. The road leads to health and happiness. Building
things you like into your everyday life is a quick and easy way
to take care of you and strengthen your connection with yourself.
Activity: Make a list of all the things you like.
The list could have your favorite music, favorite food, activities,
colors, fragrances, etc. Next, make a conscious effort to put the
things from the list into your life. It is a natural way to honor
yourself, as you create an environment that pleases you. It is a
simple way to show yourself that you care. As the relationship with
yourself grows, your self-confidence and self-esteem will grow stronger
as well.
