OPTIMIZE YOUR HEALTH
Osteoporosis Awareness and Prevention
MAY 2007
This month’s newsletter focuses on building and maintaining
healthy bones. We will take a look at the roles of nutrition, physical
activity, supplementation and pharmaceuticals in bone health. Our
skeletons help determine our mobility, flexibility and mechanical
support as well as serving as a calcium reservoir for countless
physiological functions. Healthy bones form the foundation for
a vital body. Here at The Center, it is our goal to provide the
most comprehensive and up-to-date information so that our clients
may find optimal health.

May is Osteoporosis Awareness month. Do you know enough about
osteoporosis to protect your skeleton? Lets do a crash course here
to review the definition, statistics, risk factors, work-up and

Stronger Than Bones
How strong is your self-confidence? How high is your self-esteem?
Like our bones, confidence and esteem are critical to our ability
to hold up in a modern world. Without a positive sense of self,
we can easily crumble under daily stressors. Most people are uncomfortable

are your best qualities?" Many people find it difficult to
make a list of things that they like or find pleasure in doing.
It seems that we have lost touch with the person that matters the
most — yourself.

Tai Chi for Bone Health
Studies have shown that Tai Chi may lead to improved balance,
reduced fear of falling, increased strength, increased functional
mobility, greater flexibility, all factors that may contribute

Tai chi (ti-CHE) is sometimes described as "meditation in
motion." Originally developed in China as a form of self-defense,
this graceful form of exercise has existed for about three centuries.
It's becoming increasingly popular around the world, both as a

Nutrition for the Prevention of Osteoporosis
Keeping your bones strong throughout your lifetime can mean better
posture and fewer fractures down the road. No matter what your
age, it’s never too late to reduce bone loss. Osteoporosis
is the thinning and brittling of bones due to either a lack of
protein matrix that stores calcium or a shortage of dietary calcium
(99 percent of the body’s supply of this vital mineral is
in the bones and teeth.) It is important that your diet is not
just balanced but also includes the particular ingredients you
need for strong, healthy bones. That includes getting the right
amounts of calcium and vitamin D.

D is for Strong Bones and So Much More!
Vitamin D has been recently recognized as a "wonder vitamin".
Vitamin D is not only critical in bone and muscle health, but is
also important in reducing the risk of insulin resistance / diabetes,
cardiovascular disease and certain cancers. In fact, a researcher
went as far as saying "vitamin D inadequacy might be contributing
