OPTIMIZE YOUR HEALTH
Protecting Your Vision
Visions From Within
By Ryan Seay, Ph.D., Clinical Psychologist
Typically we think of vision as referring to the seeing of objects
or materials in our environment. You can see the words you are
reading and the keyboard in front of you. There is another type
of “vision” that can improve our wellness (mind and
body) – it’s called imagery.
Imagery has been used longer than spoken language to communicate
to others and to ourselves. When using imagery to communicate with
the body, it is easy to understand how effective it is. As an example,
remember a time when falling asleep was difficult. Laying in bed
saying (aloud or to yourself), “Go to sleep. Go to sleep.” was
probably not an effective technique in inducing sleep or obtaining
cooperation from your body. However, if you were to imagine a comfortable
place where the temperature and lighting was perfect and where
you body was relaxed and peaceful, you may have experienced sleep
much quicker. Your body changed and allowed sleep because it understood
the message you intended through the images.
The body does not understand spoken language as an effective way
of communicating. However, research has revealed that imagery and
symbols have been an effective way to communicate changes or corrections
to a malfunctioning body. Imagery has been helpful in many disorders
from cancer to headaches. Learning to develop your imagery skills
can be fun and entertaining. However, most importantly it may just
improve your overall wellness and increase your health and happiness
